What is Fasnet?

Fasnets-Butzâ Fasnet is the southern German form of the “fifth season”, of carnival or shrovetide. Fasnet includes “witch parties”, “guild parties” and parades - all of which may end very badly. On Fasnet, you see carnival figures in with strange names: Schellâdralle and Brechalochhex. Fasnet combines traditional and modern elements. Fasnet is loud music performed by amateur musicians, the Guggâmusig - Fasnet is something non-natives never fully understand or enjoy. But we do!

By the way, be careful about calling the Fasnet “Fasching” or “Karneval” or about answering the shout “Narri!” with “Horrido!” instead of “Narro!”. Even on Fasnet not everything is funny …!

Fasnet in Dettensee

Traditionally, Fasnet in Dettensee consists of three main events: the sport club party of the SSV, each year's beginning of the Fasnet season, the Schmotzige (Thursday before ash wednesday) with the black “Soot Witches”, and finally the Shrove Tuesday with a parade through the village and the burining of the Fasnet (a symbolic straw figure) at midnight to mark the beginning of Lent.

Dettensee also has a shrovetide club [That is how I would translate “Narrenzunft”, though “fools club” is quite appropriate, too], founded in 1993. It organzies regular witch parties and guild parties (both basically excuses to get pissed). For more information check their [Deutsche Flagge] web page.
